3.23.09 – Andrew J. McKelvey (1934-2008)

Dear Friends:

It is with great sadness that I write to you about the death of an inspiring business mentor and friend.

Andy was diagnosed in 2005 with pancreatic cancer and after 3 long years of fighting, his body failed him.

Andrew McKelvey was the founder, chairman, and CEO of TMP Worldwide, the world’s largest seller of yellow page ads. TMP is also owner and operator of Monster.com, the number one job placement World Wide Web site and one of the 100 most visited Web sites.

Andy possessed a great respect for every person, project and idea.  He was always direct; and always welcomed the opportunity to share his thoughts on life and business with anyone who asked.  It was no secret however, that he was an icon in the business world, and set the bar for all future entrepreneurs.  I will dearly miss the long conversations I shared with Andy over meals.

His charisma was irresistible as crowds of his Entrepreneurial Scholars gathered around late into the evening, to listen to him share stories of trying times and humbly share stories of great success as though they were minor occurrences.  He would also tell hilarious stories of self-deprecating humor about helicopter lessons and his days as a car salesman.

My dad’s favorite quote was his closing advice at my first conference when he told us, “Don’t let school get in the way of your business!”

This was pretty funny coming from a guy who was giving me a scholarship to attend school.  But his message was not lost; and it has been some of the best advice I have received to date!

Andy’s passing marks a tremendous loss for anyone brave enough to follow their dreams.  I feel privileged for all the time I have spent with Andy.  My only regret is that our time together was so brief.

Andy’s enthusiasm, confidence and respect for others, lives on in everyone that shook his hand; and I am proud to take part in celebrating the life of such an inspirational man.

Andy, I cannot begin to express my gratitude for all that you have given me, and I will miss you very much!

I can only imagine you finally know how it’s ALL done.
